While the emerging new media of videogames, social networks and blogs has generated a lot of interest from online marketers, they are not ready to use them in their marketing campaigns in the next year.
They are still going to focus on proven channels such as email and search.
Almost 3/4 pf marketers said they have no plans to market through videogames during the next year, and another 57 percent said there are no plans to advertise through mobile in the next year. Somewhat surprising to me was that only 13 percent are currently using blogs or social networks in the marketing efforts, and around 50 percent say they don't plan on it for this year either.
What marketers are looking at is contextual and behavioral targeting during this year.
While I'm the type that does like to embrace new technologies and see how they'll work, I'm not too bothered about these statistics. Some people have already simply dropped a lot of their email marketing efforts and not doing as much search and are pursuing the new things. This is a huge mistake as the great majority of results are still in those areas and growing.
There is so much happening online now and new things being introduced faster than anybody can keep up with, that it is better to slowly enter into things while still using that which has gotten us here. Yet, we can't wait too long to enter into some of these things. Next year there should be a much higher percentage of marketers trying these newer things out.
