This comment might sound provocative, but there are many times that people who are rightly performing "due diligence," do it for so long that they never get their online marketing going, or they fail to take it to the next level.
One thing about doing your research is that you can never get perfect information. All you can do is research the best you can and make a decision based upon the information available.
I know of a number of people that go from one guru to another and become information junkies rather than marketing practitioners.
Get enough information to make decisions. Too much information paralyzes you into inaction and creates doubts rather than answers to problems and taking action steps.
So that which is a good thing to do at first, becomes the enemy of beginning an online marketing business or taking your business to the next level.
The answer is to do enough research to understand what it is you want to do and where you want to go. From there develop a simple, easy to implement plan and then put it into action. Waiting too long will cause you to stay in one place and go round in circles, thinking you're really doing something when you're really standing still.
