Wearing a multi-colored Afro wig and a fake mustache, Dong Lu, a Beijing blogger and postcaster produces an irreverent, fun look at the World Cup soccer tournament.
He produces his show in his apartment living room with the help of three friends. Today he received his 10 millionth hit.
While China is sensitive when it comes to social and political issues, in the area of sports and entertainment it allows a lot more freedom and Dong Lu takes advantage of it.
"In sports journalism there is relative freedom of expression and we can give our opinions about a match and other sporting issues," said Dong.
This story underscores some things that online marketers can learn from. First Dong Lu, already producing content before the cup, simply tied into the huge event and has scored big. This is one thing we can to from time to time as big stories or events that spread over a period of time occur. It can bring a big windfall when one handles it right.
The next thing is that the blogger and podcaster absolutely loves what he does and did it before it got big. He is completely passionate about doing it.
Last, in the more serious thinking Chinese way of life, he offers a product that is just a lot of fun and makes people laugh.
He's hit the right product, with the right delivery, in the right niche and at the right time.
That's why he received his 10 millionth hit when the blog was only started in November of 2005.
