We've talked some about this issue before, but let's talk a little bit more on the reasons why being on top of the search engine rankings isn't necessarily the place you want to be.
In the past we've talked about one of the reasons being that we must have a multi-faceted campaign; not relying on only one way of doing things. There are many things that drive traffic to your sites.
Now another reason that ranking on the top isn't that important is that serious searchers almost never click on the top ranked position. A lot of people want to dig deeper into the search to find the answers they really need.
A number of marketers I know say that they experience the same thing. They get better conversions when they aren't in the top position.
I find myself doing the same thing. When I really want to perform due diligence on something, I rarely go with the first place position. If I do, I always check a number of others out along with it, depending on the reason I am conducting the search.
So if you're a ways down on the list, and you have a good proposition that is as competitive as those above you, you'll do great in those lower rankings. Do waste a lot of time on obsessing on being number one on the page for no other reason than being number one on the page.
