Google (GOOG) is always heard about in the news, far above its competitors because of its continuous growth and importance in search. But when it comes to areas like mail, news and finance portals, Yahoo (YHOO) is the hands down leader.
As I said in the last post Google is dominating and growing its lead in the search area. But let's look at the other areas that are important.
In mail, Yahoo Mail has a 42.4 percent share, with Hotmail second at 22.9 percent. Google's Gmail is a distant 4th with a miniscule 2.54 percent, which is even way behind MySpace which holds a strong 19.5 percent share.
In news Yahoo is over three times as large as Google as it has a 6.9 percent share versus only 1.9 for Google.
Yahoo finance also excels as it has a 34.9 percent share in comparison to MSN Money (MSFT) with 13.40 percent and Google Finance almost non-existant at 0.29 percent.
The hitwise report also states that in maps, Mapquest is still the leader with a 56.30 share, with Yahoo in second here with 20.50 percent and Google Maps at 7.5 percent.
Even in the other area of maps, MSN Virtual earth beats out Google with 4.3 percent with Google at 2 percent.
This figures shows me why I think Google has been showing a little wear and are starting to have to look at things a lot differently than they have in the past. Search is only a one part of the overall online story.
