I have been debating whether I wanted to share this with you or not. It is one of those things that will be changing everything on the Internet. No, not will be, it already is and has.
What is this little tidbit that is changing everything? What has happened that makes the future of the Internet full of great possibilities for those who get it?
The now and future growth of the Internet in general, is no longer going to entail the "geek" factor. Oh, there will still be those things that power-users will want to get involved with, but they will serve that niche market in general, but there won't be much growth there.
What am I saying? The Internet, overall is full geekified. Those geeks that want to be involved are already there, it won't be a growth area in the future, except for things that that particular market segment gets newly introduced to. Yet, in general these numbers aren't going to increase except possibly in slowly responding countries, but even in those places there will be few as compared to the overall population.
What should that mean to you as an online marketer? Not only an increasing commitment to making everything easy as we talked about in the last post, but what about the content that non-geeks will want to partake in? I have already begun to see a shift from things in a number of markets that aren't geared to the tech-savvy and the demographic that most of them belong to.
This is a subtle change that isn't going to be as exciting or quick to take hold as the geeks are known for. This coming market is going to be less tech-savvy, cautious, you will have to earn their trust more and do more handholding and take even more radical steps to make using your site so easy that it will be so intuitive to the average person that they will want to come back over and over again for the purpose they visit you.
The ease-of-use of your site, within its niche, is going to increasingly be the killer-app in the years ahead. Are you ready for the long haul?
