The biggest thing all of us online marketers desire is for our visitors to do the thing that we've created a page for. We are always searching for ways to increase the response rate.
Have you ever seen a child maybe carrying something like a bowl with water that may be about too big for them to handle and they are doing ok until you till them to be careful not to drop it? From the second you say that, their attention switches from where they want to take and set it to the floor where they are now picturing it dropping to. The how many times have they dropped it?
It made me think of online marketing especially where we can use these types of commands or suggestions to get our customers to do the thing we want them to do by suggesting they don't do it.
Think of something like "Whatever you do don't touch this button!" You could even have an arrow pointing to it. I would bet that your percentage of people pushing that button would skyrocket. It would have to be in large letters and extremely obvious and the only major action you require them to do on the page.
Two of the things that commands or suggestions can do is spark the stubborness in people where they say to themselves that nobody is going to tell me not to push that button, and then they push it. Or it will also draw out that major human trait called curiosity where they can't help but push it just to see where it leads.
There are a lot of ways you could apply this technique. If you've done this let us know how it works. Or if you try it get back and tell us the results. Make sure you measure and track it all to see the results.
