Dell (DELL) Computer has partnered with Google (GOOG) to put Googles browser toolbar and other Google software applications on its newly shipped computers. Google will also be powering Dell's start page. I'm sure this will cost Google a lot, but it's probably worth it.
Companies like Dell and others like Hewlett Packard (HPQ) make their desktop real estate available to the various online and software service providers, and it's almost always a win for everybody. The computer companies get their highly profitable royalties and the providers get the built-in audience.
Obviously this deal is a response to Microsofts (MSFT) coming IE 7 release that will include their search as a default. The justice departments ruling that it isn't a part of the monopoly agreement probably made Google scramble in response to the decision.
Also the recent deal between Yahoo! (YHOO) and eBay (EBAY) for the purpose of extending Yahoo's search growth, is part of the reason for the Dell, Google alliance.
