Why write so much about this article written by Georgie Ann Geyer? To be honest with you it's a great business lesson to learn and history one as well.
If you have done any studying of the history of business, you'll know that when new technologies and industries emerge, the ones that are threatened by the new, use arguments about the end of the world scenarios, if their industry doesn't survive.
The American steel industry years ago was one of them, as an example of many. The world didn't fall apart because the American steel industry isn't as big as it was 30 years ago. Neither will the news reporting world either.
Years ago Alvin Toffler wrote about this overall phenomenon in his book Power Shift. On page 10 he says "Change the way wealth is made and you immediately collide with all the entrenched interests whose power arose from the prior wealth-system. Bitter conflicts erupt as each side fights for control of the future."
All of the silly rhetoric I exposed in these posts, is nothing more than what Toffler talked about years ago.
Warren Buffett talked about something similar years ago when he was asked the question of why "If higher math is not important in selecting stocks, why are academic and professional journals dense with quantitative analysis?"
Buffett replied:
"Every priesthood does it. How could you be on top if there is no one on the bottom?"
The old newpaper and big network journalism was nothing more than a tool to used to sway public opinion, that world is now over, thankfully. The public has gotten tired of the one-sided centralized media as represented by the printed and television media. As a result they flock to hear what others have to say and different perspectives that they can "pick and choose" what they want to read and hear.
That's the real irk of Georgie Ann Geyer and others like her, nobody treats them like a priesthood anymore. You can whine all you want, that world, for the most part, is completely over.
The article written by Georgie Ann Geyer is nothing more than a false rant against the emerging new media world that is leaving the other one far behind. Go Bloggers!
