Poor Georgie Ann Geyer, she is being haunted these days. In her words she is being haunted, taunted and flaunted in her ideas about the American people.
Listen to this statement she makes and I'll get back to it later after we talk about her personal woes. In commenting on the war in Iraq she says "Forging ahead with a war in a desperately difficult part of the world, fighting a country that had not attacked us, involving us in a foreign policy situation that threatened to destroy the American principles of internationalism hammered out over the ages -- why was so little outcry heard from the citizenry?"
She continues on with this "Oh yes, I know, there were demonstrations in some cities across the country. Yes, there was the wild figure of Sen. Bobby Byrd, speaking out in the Congress and seeming, in his lone sanity, to be almost a mad prophet. There was a handful of us columnists."
You know someone is gone when they call "Bobby" Byrd a "wild" figure...speaking out in the Congress and seeming, in his lone sanity...ah yes, Robert Byrd, the only sane guy left in America. You talk about nuts running the asylum.
One more so you get the idea "But where was the rest of the country? Indeed, where are they now? The voices coming even from the commonsensical heartland, which is only now beginning to see the cruel absurdity of this war, express more of a "get it over with" attitude than any moral or principled stand." Oh, pooooor Georgie Ann.
Now doesn't all of this seem to lead to some great philosophical statement that is about to be unfolded? Do you know what her answer is? "I think we have come upon one of the major reasons this week. Too many Americans no longer seriously read newspapers, and thus don't have any idea what is happening in the world."
I'm not kidding, this is a direct quote from her. The reason her world is falling apart is because we are no longer reading enough printed pages. We're are all a bunch of dummies, from her point of view, because of it.
Then she gets into her proof of these comments, she asks us to look at a report called "The State of the News Media 2006." Then she offers her little buzzword to comfort us that we should trust her and this report "nonpartisan." That just gives me chills all over. They even call themselves the Project for Excellence in Journalism. Her opinion is that it describes the crisis in newsgathering.
Next post: More on the old media whining.
