
With the purchase of Writely recently by Google, it spoke of something much bigger than the deal itself; it was an acknowledgment that Web 2.0 is for real.
Most of you reading this will know that Writely is an online word processor that is being touted as an alternative for the more expensive desktop applications like Microsoft Word. But the purchasing of Writely has bigger implications than just that. It is a representive of numerous new companies dotting the Internet landscape that are pouring into formerly static web pages with the speed, power and features of complex desktop applications. Couple that with the growing wireless and broadband communications ability on the web and you realize that the Internet itself is being redefined.
With a tool like Writely, now you can go way beyond simple online document storage. It is possible now to collaborate in unique ways like groups being able to work on a document together in real time without needing to reload a web page.
This among many other applications are fueling the new Internet boom that is starting to rival the one in the late 1990s. And in a similar fashion it is bringing in huge amounts of new money as a result.
