We've read throughout the recent years on the promise and desire for mass customization. What exactly is mass customization? Why is it so desirable? Why will it be so profitable?
First of all, in the past when it was talked about, it sometimes has referred to things on the retail product side. While this is slowly emerging to a degree, it is going to take some time to really make this a reality.
For example, in the case of buying new cars, you can order what you want with a variety of options, that gives you some empowerment in this area. But there are still some limitations in that it is still from a limited number of choices.
In the area of services, things are growing quicker as technology is able to move faster without the physical limitations of things.
One area that I don't think was looked upon from the beginning of this trend was that consumers not only wanted to be able to customize, in the area of service, but wanted to customize in a variety of ways with one service.
What I mean is that as they go about doing their work, play, entertainment or eating or whatever their current activity, they want the option to be able to do whatever business needs to be done at their convenience.
If they're out and want to make contact with a cell phone, they want that option, if at home on their desktop computer, they want an option there as well. Name whatever device or location they may be at, and they want the option to be able to do business with whatever is available.
This is what I mean by multiple or a variety of mass-customization demands.
When this originally serviced as a desire of consumers, most people thought that this meant one thing that the customer preferred, and as a result offered them a certain color. But in this new day of devices built that offer numerous ways of communicating, consumers now expect companies to offer them a way of doing business in each of them.
In other words, mass customization is now much more than simply personalization.
