We talked on some preparations last post on starting a website for your small business. Here are 3 tips on what not to do.
Last post we touched on this a little but it is of primary importance: don’t worry too much about how beautiful your site may be. Not only is that overrated, it is counterproductive to your purpose.
Don’t Overdue the Graphics
People will come to your site for the purpose of getting information on the products and services you offer, not to have a visually stunning experience. What happens if your site is so graphically “hip” is that people will have a hard time navigating your site and finding what they want in a short time. Every study ever done on this says that customers will get frustrated and leave.
Don’t Shop for Designers on Price alone
a
Make sure that the only consideration you have with a designer is not price. Every designer will be a little different with what they offer. What does their work include? Will there be a need for updates, and are there some included in the price? Will they continue on with the work until you say you are satisfied, or will they go for a certain amount of time and ask for more? Are they going to write some content for you?
a
There are some designers that will make the site for you and put it on a CD and mail it to you. Then you are left with the job of figuring out how to upload it to the web.
a
Still a number of them will help you with the process along the way such as helping you with your domain name and a good hosting company and will upload the files to the site. In other words they make it a turnkey operation for you.
a
These are the types of things to keep in mind when you think of price.
a
Be prepared before you get the designer
a
A great advantage for you and the designer you hire is to have everything ready for when you hire them; all the things that you will do yourself.
a
If you are going to research and get a domain name registered and hosting taken care of, have it done. If you’re going to write all the content or hire someone to do it other than the designer, have it ready.
a
The benefit of all of this is that it will get things done much quicker and can keep the costs down if you’re paying by the hour.
