David Sifry was having his moment; a moment that he had been waiting for since he founded the popular search engine Technorati had arrived. He knew that if his instincts were right and blogging was going to become as popular as he thought it would, that he was going to eventually have the big guys come after him. That time has come in Google.
a
He had spent the three years while waiting on doing everything he could to enlarge the advantage he had by being the first one in the market place.
a
Sifry’s strategy was based upon the belief that he would have to compete on the strength of the technology.
a
Michael Fitzgerald of Inc.com says this:
a
If Technorati was to survive, Sifry reasoned, it would have to do so on the basis of its technology. From the outset, he had been pushing his programmers to refine Technorati's novel way of searching the growing number of weblogs. And despite the long and admittedly scary shadow cast by Google, Sifry's instincts told him to ignore the new competition and stick to his plan.”
a
“Google, after all, had added other new services without killing its smaller rivals. The search engine Ask Jeeves, for example, remains viable. And Shopping.com, a shopping search engine, not only survived Google's 2002 launch of Froogle, but wound up being purchased by eBay for $620 million in June 2005, which was hardly a bad outcome. Still, it was hard to imagine sitting back and doing nothing as one of the most powerful companies in the world encroached on his turf. "I take them extraordinarily seriously," Sifry says. "These are very smart people, smarter than me, and they've made tons of money."
a
As of today Technorati is still expanding at a faster rate than Google Blog Search. This is according to Hitwise an Internet traffic monitor. As of December, Technorati was tracking 23.4 million blogs while adding about 70,000 a day to the list. Along with that they were getting about 1.5 visitor for every one visitor to Google Blog Search.
a
Not too bad for an upstart beginner.
